Matt Payne clinches ninth Sandown pole amid wet qualifying drama
Matt Payne secured his ninth pole position for the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship at Sandown International Motor Raceway on 6 November, as reported on 8 November, while several championship contenders failed to reach the Top Ten Shootout. The Sandown 500, held on 6 November, featured three races that would decide the remaining spots for the Adelaide Grand Final, with Payne leading the points standings.
In the second practice session Payne posted the fastest lap and Triple Eight’s Chaz Mostert suffered a shift-cut problem that limited his pace. All seven Finals Series drivers qualified for the Top 10 Shootout, and Payne again topped the session, earning a front-row start opposite Anton De Pasquale.
