EU chief denounces Lavrov’s false Ukraine claims, photo with ministers scrapped
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on 31 October that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was spreading false narratives about Ukraine, and noted that European leaders declined to appear in a joint photograph with him at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta. Lavrov had arrived in the United States on 30 October despite U. S. lawmakers urging his exclusion.
Analysts warned that deep divisions over the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East could hinder consensus among the foreign ministers. European delegations, joined by Australia, the United Kingdom and others, objected to being photographed with Lavrov, prompting U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to remove the traditional group photo from the agenda.
