FBI Attributes $6.3 Billion Binance Crypto Theft to North Korea
The FBI has identified North Korean hackers as responsible for a $6. 3 billion cryptocurrency theft from Binance, one of the largest heists in the sector. Binance has frozen approximately $3 billion of the stolen assets and announced it has reimbursed 90% of the losses using internal funds, with withdrawals expected to resume soon. The incident began when Binance detected unusually large transfers totaling over $5. 5 billion from its hot wallets, prompting the exchange to halt deposits and withdrawals temporarily.
Stablecoin issuers such as Tether and Circle froze about $1. 8 billion of assets to prevent further movement. The suspected hackers used decentralized finance platforms to convert frozen stablecoins into Ethereum, leading to additional market pauses. Blockchain analytics firms, including TRM Labs and Chainalysis, attributed the attack to North Korea's Lazarus Group, specifically the TraderTraitor unit. The breach has prompted major crypto exchanges to enhance security measures and encouraged industry-wide information sharing to prevent similar incidents.
