Israeli Forces Displace Thousands in Hebron Ahead of Elections
Residents and philanthropists in Hebron opened their homes to families forced to flee after a large-scale Israeli military operation sealed off parts of the city and displaced thousands of Palestinians, officials said on 27 October. The operation, which began on 24 October, imposed a citywide lockdown, demolished dozens of homes in the Ein Deir Baha district and converted several Palestinian residences into Israeli military posts, displacing roughly 370 families.
The crackdown followed a checkpoint attack on the same day in which two gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers, prompting Israeli troops to raze the neighbourhood and evict hundreds of families. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu subsequently pledged harsher security measures and ordered further demolitions, including the razing of a Palestinian businessman’s house.
