Apple launches foldable iPhone and touchscreen laptop under CEO John Ternus
Apple announced its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, and a touchscreen laptop, with limited worldwide availability, under chief executive John Ternus. Inside Retail Asia reported that the iPhone Duo debuted globally, prompting long queues and mixed assessments of its design. Earlier durability tests showed the hinge remained firm after more than 32,000 folds in a custom rig built by a reviewer and a hardware designer, according to Cult of Mac, while Joanna Stern’s own 32,000-fold test found little change in hinge feel, as reported by MacRumors. The Verge noted that YouTuber Tim Pan completed 11,500 folds, including 1,000 in freezing temperatures, confirming hinge durability but observing a more pronounced screen crease. CNET began a systematic folding test to compare the hinge’s longevity with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8.
MacRumors cited JerryRigEverything’s assessment that the device failed its durability test due to dust ingress and screen damage. A subsequent iFixit teardown, also reported by MacRumors, identified hinge dust issues and gave the phone a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10. The Register highlighted that iFixit rated the iPhone Duo’s repairability higher than rival foldables but warned of hinge dust problems. Gizmodo reported independent testing indicating the inner display could crack after roughly 75,000 folds. Finally, Tom’s Guide recommended the Motorola Razr Fold as the top 2024 foldable after evaluating Apple’s device alongside competitors.
