iFixit teardown highlights repair challenges and hinge dust issues in iPhone Duo

Summary

iFixit’s teardown of the iPhone Duo found dust ingress in the hinge, identified potential causes of screen cracks, and gave the device a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10.

iFixit dismantled the iPhone Duo to assess its durability, dust resistance and repairability. The company first exposed the phone to fluorescent dust, noting that while the IP68 rating kept most particles out, some dust entered the USB-C port, speaker mesh, bezel and, importantly, the hinge. The dust in the hinge caused a crunching sensation and could contribute to screen damage. Compared with the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, the Duo’s hinge collected fewer particles, but iFixit warned that the device may not be ideal for beach use because dust can still reach moving parts.

The teardown showed that the nano-texture cover layer can be removed easily, as intended by Apple, and can be replaced for $19 with AppleCare+ or $49 without it. The battery uses the adhesive introduced with the iPhone 16, allowing removal with a small electrical charge, which iFixit described as the "best battery removal experience" among foldables.

The outer display detached without difficulty, and iFixit called its construction "robust," facilitating repairs that must pass through this layer. Removing the inner screen required heat and considerable adhesive removal. Apple markets the inner display as a ten-layer stack; iFixit was able to peel back several layers for microscopic inspection.

The iPhone Duo features an unstacked, single-layer logic board—the first such design since the iPhone 8—helping keep the device thin. iFixit suggested that reported screen failures could stem from pressure, trapped particles, repeated bending, or manufacturing defects, noting that wiring issues can mimic a cracked display.

Analysis of damaged units showed that failures often occur near the hinge’s transition area where the flex cable gap meets the central hinge support, rather than directly at the cable passage. iFixit built a 3D hinge model from teardown footage, patents and CT scans to map stress points, and highlighted the curved rails of the hinge as a possible source of stress concentration.

With a repair manual released on launch day, the ability to remove the outer display intact, and batteries that release with an electrical charge, iFixit assigned the iPhone Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10. The inner display and hinge assembly were identified as the main vulnerabilities. The Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold each received a score of 4 out of 10.
