First Participant Vaccinated in Tumaini Trial Against Bundibugyo Ebola
ABC News reported that the first participant was inoculated in the Tumaini vaccine trial targeting the Bundibugyo strain of ebolavirus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Health officials in the DRC, according to China Daily Hong Kong, launched the trial in the hardest-hit region as the outbreak surpassed 10,000 confirmed cases and nearly 5,000 deaths, with infections reported in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.
Earlier this month Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in Abuja—a 42-year-old diplomat’s wife returning from Kampala—prompting extensive contact tracing, as noted by The Guardian, and 44 contacts placed under observation, according to the health minister cited by the BBC. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warned that the Bundibugyo strain was now present across central, eastern and western Africa and urged against border closures, per Yahoo.
