Ebola outbreak in Congo spreads to Nigeria and Kenya, cases exceed 9,000
Eurasia Review reported that the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak that began in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 9,400 cases and 4,500 deaths, with imported cases confirmed in Nigeria and Kenya, raising concerns about cross-border transmission and gaps in financing and health-system preparedness. The Guardian said health officials in Nigeria confirmed the country’s first Ebola infection in Abuja, prompting extensive contact tracing. BBC quoted the Nigerian health minister as stating that the patient was a 42-year-old diplomat’s wife who had returned from a two-week stay in Kampala, was recovering, and that 44 contacts were under observation.
The Guardian later reported that investigators were still uncertain how the patient contracted the virus, noting conflicting reports. Yahoo relayed a warning from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention that the Bundibugyo strain was now present across central, eastern and western Africa and urged against border closures as part of a coordinated response.
