Eric Dane’s Memoir Reveals First ALS Symptom and Private Struggle
Page Six reported that the late actor Eric Dane recounted in his posthumous memoir that losing control of a chopstick while eating sushi was the first symptom of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and that he asked his struggle to remain private. Page Six also noted that his memoir detailed a near-drowning incident during a 2025 vacation in Antigua, when his daughter Georgia rescued him from the water. Earlier, TMZ described a 2024 near-drowning episode that highlighted the progression of his disease.
HuffPost reported that the loss of hand coordination while eating sushi prompted his ALS diagnosis, which he publicly disclosed in April 2025. The memoir further listed extensive drug use in his twenties and recounted his diagnosis, according to Page Six. ABC News quoted Rebecca Gayheart saying she cared for Dane during his ALS battle and described how the family coped with his passing.
