NYC Council to Approve Phase-Out of Central Park Carriage Horses by 2028
The New York City Council is set to approve legislation on October 22, 2026 that would phase out horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park by June 2028, a move prompted by a fatal accident that killed an 18-year-old tourist and has sparked renewed debate over animal welfare, PBS reported. The proposal, supported by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Council Speaker Julie Menin, calls for a gradual ban and includes a transition plan for carriage drivers as well as protections for the horses, according to BBC. Gothamist added that the mayor’s administration has pledged additional safeguards for workers and animals as the council prepares to vote.
