Study finds 75,000-year-old Neanderthal likely killed by spear

Researchers led by Emma Pomeroy and Chris Hunt said the 75,000-year-old Neanderthal skeleton from Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan shows a wooden spear deliberately thrust into the chest, indicating the individual likely died from a homicide. Earlier analysis of the same remains identified a 15 mm perforation in a shoulder blade, described as the earliest known lethal injury inflicted by a wooden spear. The team also noted other injuries that they interpreted as evidence the individual received care from peers after being wounded.
