Warwick Researchers Predict Green and Pink Hues in White Dwarfs
University of Warwick researchers said that some white dwarf stars could appear green or pink because atmospheric sodium, calcium and other elements absorb specific wavelengths, a finding reported in their latest study. The claim builds on earlier work by the same team that modeled the visible colors of white dwarfs and identified a range of possible hues.
They previously reported the discovery of WD J1330+6435, a white dwarf about 326 light-years away whose spectrum shows a pale green glow caused by sodium from accreted planetary debris, marking the first confirmed green star. Their modeling also highlighted the pinkest known white dwarf.
