Earlier in the week, the storm had intensified to a Category 5 system off Mexico’s Pacific coast, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue warnings for Baja California Sur. On 22 September, Polo made landfall on the peninsula with winds near 110 mph, causing power outages and localized flooding before weakening as it tracked toward the U.
