Pentagon Reverses Course, Seeks Funding for E-7 Wedgetail Aircraft

Résumé

The Pentagon plans to amend its Fiscal Year 2027 budget to include funding for E-7 Wedgetail aircraft, reversing its previous decision to exclude the program.

The Pentagon is set to revise its proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget to request funding for the E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft, aiming to replace the aging E-3 Sentry fleet. This marks a significant shift from the original budget proposal, which omitted funding for the E-7 program, raising concerns about potential capability gaps.

During a recent House Appropriations Committee hearing, Representative Tom Cole highlighted the loss of an E-3 aircraft in an Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia in March, emphasizing the urgency of the E-7 program. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth acknowledged the change in the Department's approach, stating, "I think that mindset was indicative of a mindset that we've shed, which is the divest-to-invest mindset, which was an austerity mindset."

The Air Force has already awarded contracts to Boeing for seven developmental E-7s, with plans for a U.S.-specific configuration. The E-7 Wedgetail, based on the Boeing 737, offers advanced capabilities in airborne surveillance and battle management, addressing the limitations of the current E-3 fleet.

Despite previous arguments against the E-7 program due to concerns over vulnerability and cost overruns, the Pentagon's revised stance reflects a recognition of the immediate need to modernize airborne early warning capabilities. The timeline for operational deployment of the E-7 remains under review, with efforts underway to expedite the acquisition process.

In the interim, the Air Force continues to rely on the diminishing E-3 fleet, which faces increasing operational demands and maintenance challenges. The Department's commitment to the E-7 program signifies a strategic move to enhance national defense capabilities in response to evolving threats.
