Eagles kick off 2026 training camp with healthy roster and new offensive schemes

Summary

Philadelphia Eagles opened their 2026 training camp with most players passing conditioning tests, while coach Sean Mannian introduced new under-center concepts and the team evaluated several position battles.

The Philadelphia Eagles began their 2026 training camp on Wednesday at the Jefferson Health Training Complex, with the majority of the roster in good health. Outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list after a pectoral strain, but the team expects his absence to be short-term. All other players cleared the conditioning test, including linebacker Jihaad Campbell, who returned from a shoulder issue, and wide receiver Makai Lemon, who recovered from a hamstring strain.

Position battles were evident across the roster. Safety Cooper DeJean and Andrew Mukuba are slated to start at safety, while Marcus Epps and Michael Carter II are competing for the nickel role. Cornerback Quinyon Mitchell rotated with Jonathan Jones during drills, and the inside linebacker spots feature competition between Zack Baun, Campbell, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Smael Mondon. With A.J. Brown now with the New England Patriots, the wide-receiver group sees DeVonta Smith as the clear WR1, while Dontayvion Wicks, Hollywood Brown, Lemon, Darius Cooper and Johnny Wilson vie for playing time.

Offensive coordinator Sean Mannian continued to implement under-center sets, play-action and motion, mirroring concepts from the Kyle Shanahan-Sean McVay scheme. Quarterback Jalen Hurts showed improvement in under-center situations, though some early passes were off-target. He connected on a notable 7-on-7 play with receiver Cooper, who made a diving catch in the slot.

The offensive line appeared settled, with veteran guard Jordan added after minicamp and competition ongoing for swing-tackle duties between Fred Johnson and another reserve. New O-line coach Chris Kuper is working to increase versatility among backup linemen.

Running back Saquon Barkley received his first handoff of camp, and backup Tank Bigsby also saw touches, suggesting a potential complementary role. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, entering his third season, retained most of his unit while planning to add new concepts. Defensive highlights included Jalyx Hunt stepping into a starting outside-linebacker role and recording several impactful plays.

Second-unit quarterbacks Tanner McKee and Andy Dalton continued to split snaps, with McKee completing a pass to rookie tight end Eli Stowers and Dalton delivering a deep throw to Johnny Wilson. Overall, the Eagles will not run full pads until the fifth practice, but the early sessions indicated a focus on refining the run game and integrating new offensive strategies.
