Chiefs Day One of Training Camp Highlights Rookie Receiver and Defensive Adjustments

Resumen

Kansas City Chiefs completed their first full-team practice, noting rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen earning the quarterback's trust while veteran players dealt with injuries and roster moves.

Kansas City held its first full-team training-camp practice on Wednesday, with coaches using a shortened, acclimation-period session before moving to full pads in the next two on-field workouts. Wide receiver Rashee Rice and veteran cornerback L’Jarius Sneed left the practice early for rehabilitation, and defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott began camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list but remained eligible for activation later in the preseason. Rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane, still wearing a non-contact jersey after a shoulder injury, participated in seven-on-seven and full-team drills as an outside corner.

Defensive coaches walked the starting unit through plays, positioning Sneed on the outside after his return from Tennessee. The nickel position was primarily covered by Christian Roland-Wallace and rookie Jadon Canady, while second-year linebacker Cooper McDonald started as the third linebacker in the base 4-3 alignment. A five-man front featured Chris Jones, Khyiris Tonga, George Karlaftis, Ashton Gillotte and rookie R. Mason Thomas, with Gillotte appearing as an on-ball linebacker and Thomas playing with his hand in the dirt.

On offense, right tackle Jaylon Moore did not receive snaps, with Esa Pole and rookie Kahlil Benson remaining in second-team roles. Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen received significant playing time, including red-zone targets, and was praised by head coach Andy Reid, who said, "> Cyrus had a good day today. I think Pat’s got some trust there. We’ve got a long way to go… keep growing." Reid added that Allen "has talent" and has benefited from three days of preparation before the practice.

Second-year receiver Jalen Royals struggled to connect with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, missing several routes and drops during the session. Reid commented, "> He’s got a good feel for the game. He’s just got to keep on with the reps and make sure he has a good relationship there with Pat and keeps developing that."

Kicker Harrison Butker made a 60-yard field-goal attempt in the team period and converted most of his long-range kicks, missing only a 50-plus-yard try that hit the post. The punt-return rotation featured Nikko Remigio, Brashard Smith, Cyrus Allen and Jacob De Jesus. Tight end Travis Kelce continued to be a reliable target, while teammate Jared Wiley made a notable seam catch. Running back Kenneth Walker was active in the passing game, including a red-zone play where he secured a lobbed pass from Mahomes.
