Chiefs coach Reid gives injury update, says Mahomes likely to sit out preseason opener
Andy Reid reported on several players dealing with minor injuries and indicated that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to play in the first preseason game.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update on the status of injured players after the ninth full-team practice at Missouri Western State University. He said all injuries are expected to heal, describing them as "nicks and bruises."
Reid listed the players who missed the session: linebacker Jeffrey Bassa (groin), defensive end Ashton Gillotte (hamstring), right guard Trey Smith (hip), cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (knee) and linebacker Drue Tranquill (low-back). He noted that Smith was sent to a specialist as a precaution and that Sneed’s knee is being managed as before. Tranquill is experiencing low-back tightness similar to the previous season.
Wide receiver Xavier Worthy was noted to be making progress with a shoulder issue. Cornerback Mansoor Delane and wide receiver Rashee Rice participated partially, with Delane working without live contact and Rice showing physical improvement. Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen returned to pads after a shin bruise, but avoided contact drills as he eases back into practice.
When asked about quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Reid said there is a strong likelihood he will not play in the Week 1 preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, adding that the decision for the second or third games remains uncertain. He emphasized the need for newer players at other positions to gain reps.
The team will hold one more padded practice on Saturday before a rest day on Sunday.
