Chiefs coach says Patrick Mahomes likely to sit out preseason opener
Andy Reid indicated that quarterback Patrick Mahomes probably will not play in Kansas City's first preseason game and may miss additional preseason action.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Friday that he is unlikely to play quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the team's preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams next week. Reid said the odds are "leaning against" using Mahomes in that game and that he is uncertain about Mahomes' participation in the second or third preseason contests.
Reid added that the team has new players at other positions who need repetitions, and giving them more game reps is a priority. He noted that the Chiefs experienced a season without Mahomes last year and do not want to repeat that scenario in a non-competitive preseason setting.
The Chiefs have three other quarterbacks on the roster—Justin Fields, Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun—with Fields and Nussmeier being newcomers. Final decisions on Mahomes' preseason usage are expected in the coming weeks, but he is not expected to appear in a game before the regular season begins in September.
