Chiefs coach says Mahomes may miss preseason after knee surgery

Summary

Andy Reid indicated that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to play in the Chiefs' preseason opener and may sit out the entire exhibition schedule following his December knee surgery.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Friday that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to see action in the team's preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams next week and may miss the three-game exhibition slate altogether. Mahomes underwent surgery in December to repair torn ligaments in his left knee and was cleared by the operating surgeon, Dr. Dan Cooper, to practice without restrictions late last month. > "There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him," Reid said, adding that the odds of him playing in the second or third preseason games also appear low.

Reid noted that the Chiefs have several other quarterbacks who need reps, including veteran backup Justin Fields, acquired from the New York Jets, and seventh-round draft pick Garrett Nussmeier. > "We’ve got new people ... behind (Mahomes) that need some work. The more reps they get, the better," he said.

The team also dealt with a number of injuries during practice, including a precautionary hip exam for Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith and various ailments affecting defensive and offensive players. Wide receiver Cyrus Allen returned to practice after a shin bruise but was kept out of contact drills. > "He did a good job when he was back in there, so that’s a positive," Reid said, emphasizing a cautious approach to his reintegration.
