Chiefs coach Andy Reid gives injury update after rainy practice
Andy Reid detailed the status of several injured Chiefs players following the seventh full-team practice, noting improvements for some and ongoing issues for others.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an injury report after the team’s seventh full-team practice, which was held on a rainy morning at Missouri Western State University. Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen, who has been sidelined with a bone bruise since Monday, is "making improvement," Reid said. Defensive end Ashton Gillotte, out with a hamstring strain since last Friday, is also "making progress," as is wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who missed a second practice due to a shoulder injury.
Cornerback Kristian Fulton missed his second consecutive practice because of a hip-flexor strain. Linebacker Jeffrey Bassa suffered a groin strain during Wednesday’s session, while veteran Drue Tranquill dealt with a minor back spasm, prompting the staff to limit his participation.
"We’ll just see where that goes," Reid said of Bassa. "Tranquill just had a little back spasm, so we backed off him there," Reid added.
Veteran linebacker Jack Cochrane stepped in for the two injured players. Reid praised Cochrane’s versatility, noting he "knows all the positions" and contributes on special teams, making him a reliable option for the coaching staff.
"Jack knows all the positions; he knows everything. He’s a good special teams player on top of that. You feel comfortable, as a coach, putting him in any of those spots, and he knows that part of it. You need a couple guys like that out there," Reid said.
On the offensive side, wide receiver Rashee Rice participated in full-team, 11-on-11 drills for the first time this camp, indicating progress toward a full return.
"He got a lot of good reps today, which is important. We just have to ease him back in and keep working, and we know he’s a good football player. You could see it actually got better as practice went on," Reid said.
The team plans a lighter practice for Thursday, scheduled to start at 9:15 a.m.
