Around 9 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, a man who had bypassed security measures entered the NBC "Today" studio and approached host Craig Melvin, yelling a racial slur. Staff and security personnel intervened and detained the individual before any injury occurred. The incident was not shown on the broadcast, but a photograph taken inside the studio later showed Melvin surrounded by colleagues after the confrontation. Law enforcement sources said the man initially asked for Al Roker before moving toward Melvin. The exact route he took into the restricted area remains under investigation, and studio staff are seeking clarification on how the breach occurred.
"We are reviewing our security protocols and will cooperate fully with authorities," a spokesperson for the show said.
