Craig Melvin and Al Roker receive protective orders after studio intrusion

Summary

A New York judge issued protective orders barring Andrew Truelove from approaching Today show hosts Craig Melvin and Al Roker, and set bail after charging him with hate-crime related offenses.

A New York judge on Friday ordered Andrew Truelove to stay away from Today show anchors Craig Melvin and Al Roker, issuing protective orders after the suspect entered a restricted area of the studio and confronted Melvin. The same hearing set Truelove's bail at $10,000 and charged him with third-degree burglary and menacing, each classified as hate crimes.

According to Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Millicent Kastenbaum, Truelove followed a staff member who used an ID badge to access an employee-only vestibule near Studio 1A at the NBC headquarters on Thursday morning. He then approached Melvin in a stairwell and demanded information about Roker's whereabouts, using a racial slur during the encounter, the criminal complaint states.

Truelove was detained by security, arrested by police and transferred to Rikers Island. He faces a potential sentence of up to 15 years and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 22.

The Today show released a statement confirming the incident, noting that the intruder was quickly taken into custody without further incident and that no injuries occurred. The program said it is cooperating fully with law-enforcement investigations and emphasized its commitment to the safety of employees and guests.

"There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security," the statement read.

"TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously," the statement added.

Both Melvin and Roker returned to the broadcast on Friday, with Melvin assuring viewers that the situation had been resolved and that everyone was safe.
