NBC News terminated a security guard after an intruder entered the New York headquarters of the Today show and confronted anchor Craig Melvin. The individual, identified as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove, forced his way past two guards, missed by one while the other stepped away, and asked for veteran meteorologist Al Roker before addressing Melvin on a staircase inside the studio complex.
Melvin called security, and police detained the suspect, who was later booked on multiple hate-crime and harassment charges. The New York Police Department confirmed the charges, which include hate crime menacing, burglary, criminal trespass and harassment.
After the incident, Melvin posted on Instagram that he was unharmed and would return to the show the following morning. The Today show issued a statement saying it is cooperating with law-enforcement investigations and reviewing its security protocols, emphasizing a commitment to a safe environment for employees and guests.
Representatives for the program declined to comment further on the personnel decision.
