US Labor Activist Chris Smalls Allegedly Assaulted by Israeli Forces During Gaza Aid Mission
Chris Smalls, a US labor activist, was reportedly assaulted by Israeli forces after the interception of an aid ship attempting to reach Gaza. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition claims Smalls and other activists were detained following the incident.
An aid ship organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition was intercepted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday night as it attempted to deliver humanitarian supplies to Gaza. The vessel, named Handala, was carrying food, baby formula, diapers, and medicine in an effort to breach Israel's blockade of the territory, where UN-backed experts have warned of severe famine conditions.
According to a statement from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, American labor activist Chris Smalls was physically assaulted by seven uniformed individuals upon being taken into Israeli custody. The coalition stated that Smalls was choked and kicked, resulting in visible injuries to his neck and back. The group also alleged that Smalls, who was the only Black person aboard, faced a higher level of force compared to other detained activists. In total, 21 people were detained, including parliamentarians, medics, engineers, and journalists.
Jacob Berger, a Jewish American actor who was also on board, reported on social media that Smalls was in good spirits following his detention and that the other detainees were expected to be released soon. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has previously attempted to deliver aid to Gaza, with earlier missions also being intercepted by Israeli authorities.
Huwaida Arraf, a Palestinian American attorney and member of the Handala crew, called on governments to uphold international law and protect human rights, stating, "We should not be waiting for Israel to give permission for food or other humanitarian aid to enter ... we need to be breaking, challenging and breaking the blockade." Arraf also noted that, while European governments contacted their detained citizens, the US government had not reached out to the seven American crew members at the time of her statement.
The incident comes amid growing international criticism of Israel's blockade, with some Israeli public figures calling for sanctions in response to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
