Ferrari Unveils Luce, Its First Electric Vehicle Designed by Jony Ive

Summary

Ferrari introduces the Luce, its inaugural electric vehicle featuring an interior designed by Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio, emphasizing tactile controls over touchscreens.

Ferrari has unveiled the Luce, its first fully electric vehicle, featuring an interior designed by Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio. The design emphasizes tactile controls over touchscreens, aiming to enhance driver engagement. Ive, known for his work on Apple's iPhone, argues that touchscreens are unsuitable as primary interfaces in vehicles, stating, "To use touch in a car is something I would never dream of doing, because it requires that you look at what you're doing."

The Luce's cockpit integrates physical switches and dials with digital displays, blending traditional and modern elements. The steering wheel, inspired by classic Ferrari designs, is crafted from recycled aluminum alloy and features multifunctional controls. A distinctive feature is the glass key with an E Ink display, which changes color upon docking, adding a theatrical element to the startup process.

The vehicle is powered by a 122-kWh battery pack and four electric motors, delivering a combined output exceeding 1,000 horsepower. This setup enables the Luce to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds. The car also incorporates advanced features such as four-wheel steering and active suspension systems to enhance performance and handling.

Ferrari plans to reveal the Luce's exterior design in May, marking a significant milestone in the company's transition to electric mobility.
