Oil Prices Surge Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict

Global oil prices have experienced a significant surge following intensified military actions in the Middle East. The United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran, leading to widespread disruptions in energy supply chains.

The conflict has resulted in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage through which approximately 20% of the world's crude oil is transported. This blockade has left numerous oil tankers stranded and has severely impacted global energy markets.

In response to the escalating situation, major oil producers such as Kuwait have announced reductions in oil production as a precautionary measure. These developments have contributed to a sharp increase in oil prices, with American crude settling at $90.90 per barrel, marking a 36% rise from the previous week.

The surge in oil prices has had a direct impact on consumers, with the national average price for regular gasoline in the United States reaching $3.41 per gallon, up about 43 cents from a week ago. Diesel prices have also seen significant increases, with the national average hitting $4.33 per gallon as of March 6, 2026.

The conflict has also led to significant civilian casualties. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), over 1,000 civilians, including at least 181 children under the age of ten, have been killed in the first five days of the U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign on Iran.

The United Nations has condemned the attacks, with Secretary-General António Guterres warning of a potential broader conflict if de-escalation efforts fail.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing military actions and retaliatory strikes contributing to market volatility and concerns over prolonged disruptions in global energy supplies.
