Gas Prices Decline as Oil Sees Historic Monthly Drop

Summary

National gasoline prices have decreased to an average of $4.39 per gallon, while oil prices are on track for a 20% drop this month, driven by optimism over a potential resolution to the Iran conflict.

Gasoline prices in the United States have started to decline, with the national average now at $4.39 per gallon, a reduction of 17 cents from a recent peak. This drop in prices aligns with a projected 20% decrease in oil prices for May, marking the largest monthly decline since 2020. As of Friday, Brent crude oil prices fell to $91.51 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate dropped to $87.19.

The decline in oil prices follows indications from the White House that U.S. and Iranian negotiators are nearing an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global oil supply that has been largely blocked.

Optimism among traders has also prompted gains in stock indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, despite warnings from oil executives about potential threats to supply. ExxonMobil's Neil Chapman expressed concerns that global oil inventories are nearing critically low levels, which could drive prices to $150 per barrel if the situation worsens. Chevron's CEO Mike Wirth echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging tightening energy inventories amid strong demand, while noting that it may take time for normalcy to return.

Market conditions are currently buffered by U.S. stockpiles, with strategic reserves providing a temporary cushion against supply disruptions. Analysts suggest that if the Strait of Hormuz does not reopen soon, there could be increased pressure on U.S. crude, impacting prices further. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that oil and gasoline prices are expected to drop significantly once the conflict is resolved.
