Russia Positions 110,000 Troops Near Pokrovsk, Ukraine Reports

Russia has positioned approximately 110,000 troops near Pokrovsk, according to Ukrainian military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. He described the area around Pokrovsk as the most active segment along the 1,200-kilometer front line. Russian forces have been attempting to capture Pokrovsk for nearly a year but have not succeeded. Pokrovsk is strategically significant due to its role as a key supply hub, connecting various military positions in the region. The city, along with Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk, forms a critical part of Ukrainian defenses in the Donetsk region. Before the conflict, Pokrovsk had a population of about 60,000, but many residents have since left. The city's coking coal mine, essential for Ukraine's steel industry, ceased operations earlier this year, leading to further departures. The Institute for the Study of War noted that Ukrainian defensive operations in Pokrovsk have compelled Russia to adjust its initial plans for a direct assault. Ukrainian forces have integrated drone operations into their defense strategy. Additionally, Russian troop movements have been influenced by Ukrainian operations in Russia's Kursk region. Syrskyi reported that these operations caused Russia to redeploy approximately 63,000 troops and 7,000 North Korean troops. Consequently, Russian forces have shifted tactics, attempting to encircle Pokrovsk from the south and northeast. Recent assessments indicate that Russian forces are conducting assaults with small units, sometimes utilizing motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. Syrskyi stated that Russia continues efforts to reach the administrative border of the Donetsk region, aiming to achieve operational results and psychological impact by establishing a presence and declaring victory.
