Russia Claims Capture of Pokrovsk and Vovchansk; Ukraine Denies
Russia asserts control over Ukrainian cities Pokrovsk and Vovchansk, while Ukraine disputes these claims, stating that fighting continues in both areas.
Russian military commanders have informed President Vladimir Putin that Russian forces have captured the Ukrainian cities of Pokrovsk and Vovchansk, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The announcement was made during Putin's visit to a military command post, where Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported on the "liberation" of these cities.
Pokrovsk, known in Russian as Krasnoarmeysk, is a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region and has been under attack for months. Vovchansk, located near the Russian border in the Kharkiv region, has also experienced intense fighting. The Russian Defense Ministry released a video purportedly showing Russian soldiers raising their flag in Pokrovsk's central square.
Ukrainian officials have not confirmed the loss of these cities. Ukraine's military reported ongoing resistance, with 43 Russian attacks in the sector around Pokrovsk on Monday. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that Ukrainian troops are blocking Russian attempts to advance in Pokrovsk and the adjacent town of Myrnohrad.
The conflicting reports come amid diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's talks in Paris and a planned visit by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow to discuss a peace plan for the over 3.5-year-long war.
