Russia Intensifies Assault on Pokrovsk, Aiming to Capture Strategic Ukrainian City

Russian forces have intensified their assault on Pokrovsk, a strategic city in Ukraine's Donetsk region, employing new infiltration tactics that challenge Ukrainian defenses. The city, a vital logistics and railway hub, has been under siege for over a year and a half, with recent developments indicating a critical phase in the battle.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia has deployed approximately 170,000 troops in the Donetsk region, focusing their assault on Pokrovsk. Russian forces have captured 64 buildings in Pokrovsk in the past 24 hours, attempting to complete a pincer movement to encircle the city and neighboring Myrnohrad.
The prolonged assault has devastated the city and led to significant losses for Russia. However, Russia's shift to drone warfare and siege tactics is placing Ukrainian defenders in a difficult position. Ukrainian officers on the ground describe dire conditions, lack of resupply, and being vastly outnumbered. Despite the city’s fort-like infrastructure, morale is low, and many believe Pokrovsk could fall within weeks.
The fall of Pokrovsk would mark Russia's largest capture of a Ukrainian city since Bakhmut in May 2023, potentially opening a path toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the only large cities still under Ukrainian control in Donetsk.
