NASA's Perseverance Rover Achieves Autonomous Navigation on Mars

Résumé

NASA's Perseverance rover has successfully implemented Mars Global Localization, enabling it to autonomously determine its precise location on Mars without human assistance.

NASA's Perseverance rover has successfully implemented Mars Global Localization, a new technology that allows it to autonomously determine its precise location on Mars without human assistance. This advancement enables the rover to navigate the Martian terrain more efficiently and conduct extended scientific explorations.

Developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California, Mars Global Localization utilizes an algorithm that rapidly compares panoramic images from the rover's navigation cameras with onboard orbital terrain maps. Running on a powerful processor originally used to communicate with the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, the algorithm pinpoints the rover's location within approximately 10 inches (25 centimeters) in about two minutes. The technology was first successfully used in regular mission operations on February 2, 2026, and again on February 16, 2026.

"This is kind of like giving the rover GPS. Now it can determine its own location on Mars," said Vandi Verma, JPL's chief engineer of robotics operations for the mission. "It means the rover will be able to drive for much longer distances autonomously, so we'll explore more of the planet and get more science. And it could be used by almost any other rover traveling fast and far."

Prior to this development, Perseverance relied on visual odometry, analyzing geologic features in camera images taken every few feet while accounting for wheel slippage. However, tiny errors in this process accumulated over long drives, leading to uncertainties about the rover's exact location. This uncertainty often resulted in premature drive terminations and the need for instructions from Earth. With Mars Global Localization, the rover can now autonomously determine its position, allowing for longer and more efficient drives without waiting for human input.

The implementation of Mars Global Localization follows another recent innovation: the use of generative artificial intelligence to help plan drive routes by selecting waypoints for the rover, a task traditionally performed by human operators. Both technologies aim to enhance Perseverance's ability to travel farther and faster while reducing the workload on mission teams.

Key to the success of Mars Global Localization is the rover's Helicopter Base Station (HBS), which was initially used to communicate with the now-retired Ingenuity Mars Helicopter. Equipped with a commercial processor that is over 100 times faster than the rover's main computers, the HBS processor runs the localization algorithm efficiently. This advancement demonstrates the potential of using commercial processors in space missions, paving the way for future applications in planetary exploration.

The Perseverance mission is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which built and operates the rover on behalf of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, as part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program portfolio.
