Verstappen Secures Pole Position for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Title Decider
Max Verstappen clinched pole position for the decisive Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with title contenders Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri qualifying second and third respectively.
Max Verstappen secured pole position for the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, positioning himself ahead of championship rivals Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who qualified second and third respectively. The qualifying session set the stage for a closely contested title decider, with all three drivers in contention for the championship.
Verstappen expressed his aggressive approach for the race, stating, "All out, I have nothing to lose." He emphasized his intent to win, adding, "I'm going to defend. If I need to attack, I'll attack because what can happen? You're either second or third or you win. That would be fantastic."
Norris leads the championship standings with 408 points, holding a 12-point advantage over Verstappen and a 16-point lead over Piastri. To secure his first Formula 1 title, Norris needs to finish ahead of both rivals or secure at least a third-place finish. Verstappen requires a race win with Norris finishing off the podium, while Piastri needs a victory with Norris finishing sixth or lower.
Norris remained composed ahead of the race, stating, "I'm not too bothered to be the hunter or the hunted. Normally, to be hunted is fine because you're the one with the advantage in the first place." He added, "I'm still going to go into tomorrow and plan for how we can win the race, whether it's on pace or strategy or whatever it may be."
McLaren has confirmed they will implement team orders if necessary to ensure one of their drivers secures the championship. The qualifying session concluded with Verstappen's pole time of 1:22.207, followed by Norris and Piastri, setting up a thrilling finale to the season.
In contrast, Lewis Hamilton faced challenges during the session, crashing out in third practice due to a car issue and qualifying 16th after a small error in the final sector. Reflecting on his season, Hamilton expressed his frustration, stating, "I don't have the words to describe the feeling inside. [There is an] unbearable amount of anger and rage and, yeah, there's not really much I can say about it."
