Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of the band Lostprophets, has died following an attack in HMP Wakefield, where he was serving a 29-year sentence for child sex offenses. West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were called to the prison on Saturday morning to respond to an assault on a prisoner, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A Prison Service spokesperson stated, "We are unable to comment further while the police investigate." Watkins, 48, was convicted in December 2013 for multiple child sex offenses, including the attempted rape of a baby. His sentencing judge described the case as breaking "new ground" and "plunged into new depths of depravity." The attack occurred less than two weeks after a report highlighted increased violence at Wakefield Prison, noting that many prisoners felt unsafe, particularly older men convicted of sexual offenses. Watkins had previously been attacked in prison in August 2023, but his injuries were not life-threatening at that time. Formed in 1997, Lostprophets released five studio albums, achieving significant success in the UK and the US before disbanding following Watkins' conviction.
