Two men have been charged with the murder of Ian Watkins, the former Lostprophets frontman, who was fatally injured in Wakefield Prison.
Two men have appeared in court charged with the murder of Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of Lostprophets, who was fatally injured at HM Prison Wakefield on Saturday morning.
Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, appeared separately at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Monday, confirming their names and dates of birth. Both were remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear before Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday. No pleas were entered during the brief hearings.
Watkins, 48, was serving a 29-year sentence for multiple sexual offences, including attempted rape and sexual assault of children under 13. He was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident at the high-security prison, which houses over 600 inmates.
A recent report highlighted a significant increase in violence at HM Prison Wakefield since 2022, noting that the facility's infrastructure was in a poor state, with repeated breakdowns of essential equipment and issues with perimeter security systems.
Lostprophets, formed in Pontypridd in 1997, achieved considerable success with 11 top 40 hits and a number one album between 2002 and 2010. The band disbanded in 2013 following Watkins' conviction. In a statement at the time, the remaining members expressed being "heartbroken, angry, and disgusted" by his crimes, extending their sympathies to the victims.
