Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has publicly criticized WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, highlighting concerns over league leadership and player treatment as collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations intensify.

During her end-of-season press conference, Collier delivered a prepared statement addressing various issues within the league. She emphasized that the primary threat to the WNBA is not financial constraints or game-related issues but rather "the lack of accountability from the league office."

Collier recounted a conversation with Engelbert regarding officiating concerns, stating that the commissioner's response was, "Well, only the losers complain about the refs." She also highlighted the disparity in rookie salaries, mentioning players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, who, despite significantly contributing to the league's revenue, earn relatively low salaries in their initial years. According to Collier, Engelbert responded that Clark should be "grateful she makes $16 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn't make anything."

In response, Engelbert expressed respect for Collier and all WNBA players, stating, "I am disheartened by how Napheesa characterized our conversations and league leadership, but even when our perspectives differ, my commitment to the players and to this work will not waver."

Collier's remarks have garnered support from fellow players. Two-time MVP Elena Delle Donne referred to Collier as "the queen" and noted, "It's the care for the human part for me. I'm still not sure Cathy knows I retired. Heard from everyone but her."

The WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) acknowledged Collier's leadership, stating, "Napheesa Collier is an outstanding leader and Officer of this Union. When Phee speaks out, people listen. We are confident that her words today speak to the feelings and experiences of many, if not most or all of our members."

These developments occur as the current CBA is set to expire on October 31, with both parties reportedly far from reaching a new agreement. The ongoing negotiations are expected to address key issues such as salaries, revenue sharing, and player safety.
