Starbucks Announces Store Closures and Corporate Layoffs in $1 Billion Restructuring Plan
Starbucks is closing underperforming stores and reducing its corporate workforce as part of a $1 billion restructuring effort aimed at revitalizing the company.
Starbucks has announced a significant restructuring plan involving the closure of underperforming stores and the reduction of its corporate workforce. The company will close approximately 400 company-operated stores across North America, resulting in a net decline of about 1% in its store count. This move is part of a broader $1 billion effort to streamline operations and refocus on profitable markets.
In addition to store closures, Starbucks plans to eliminate approximately 900 non-retail corporate positions and freeze many open roles. Employees affected by these changes will be notified and offered severance packages, with efforts made to transfer store-level workers to nearby locations where possible.
CEO Brian Niccol emphasized the company's commitment to enhancing the customer experience by investing in existing stores. Over 1,000 locations are slated for remodeling to incorporate warmer tones, more comfortable seating, and additional power outlets, aiming to encourage longer visits and increased customer engagement.
These strategic changes come in response to six consecutive quarters of declining U.S. same-store sales. By focusing on store operations and customer experience, Starbucks aims to reverse this trend and position itself for future growth.
