NHTSA Investigates Tesla Model Y Door Handle Malfunctions

Summary

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated an investigation into reports of electronic door handle failures in 2021 Tesla Model Y vehicles, potentially trapping occupants inside.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a preliminary investigation into potential defects in the electronic door handles of 2021 Tesla Model Y vehicles. This action follows nine reports of door handles becoming inoperative, possibly due to low battery voltage, which in some instances left occupants trapped inside.

Tesla vehicles are equipped with manual door releases inside the cabin. However, the NHTSA noted that children may not be able to access or operate these releases. In four reported cases, parents resorted to breaking windows to free their children from the back seat.

The investigation encompasses approximately 174,300 Model Y SUVs. The NHTSA stated that the incidents appear to occur when the electronic door locks receive insufficient voltage from the vehicle. Available repair invoices indicate that batteries were replaced after such incidents took place. Of those who reported incidents, none saw a low voltage battery warning before the exterior door handles became inoperative.

The agency's evaluation will assess the scope and severity of the issue, including the risks associated with the reported conditions. Additionally, the investigation will examine Tesla's approach to supplying power to the door locks and the reliability of the associated power supplies.

This probe is part of a series of investigations into Tesla's vehicle features. The NHTSA is also examining the company's "summon" technology, which allows vehicles to autonomously navigate to the driver's location, following reports of minor collisions in parking lots. Another ongoing investigation focuses on driver-assistance features in 2.4 million Teslas, initiated after several crashes in low-visibility conditions, including one resulting in a pedestrian fatality.

Tesla has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the current investigation.
