Actor Joe Manganiello alleges mistreatment by ex-wife Sofia Vergara during his illness in upcoming memoir

Résumé

In his forthcoming memoir, Joe Manganiello says Sofia Vergara mocked him and refused his comfort while he battled a serious autoimmune disease, and he seeks to correct the public record.

Actor Joe Manganiello says his former spouse Sofia Vergara mocked him during his struggle with a severe autoimmune disorder, according to excerpts from his upcoming memoir, "Bloodlines," due out on Oct. 13. Manganiello recounts that Vergara ridiculed his small dog, Bubbles, and declined to hug him even when he asked for comfort while he was seriously ill. He also contends that, contrary to earlier statements that his desire for children caused their split, he set aside that wish because of his health concerns.

Manganiello describes his illness beginning shortly after his 2015 wedding, with symptoms that included intense abdominal pain, rashes, headaches, fatigue and gastrointestinal bleeding. Over seven years he lost 60 pounds, underwent multiple colonoscopies, and had emergency surgery in 2016 that required an ostomy bag. He says he eventually recovered after a later surgery that reconnected his digestive tract and after consulting a shaman who linked his condition to generational trauma.

The actor says writing the memoir is his way of addressing false statements that have been published about him. He added that he now receives support from his fiancée, Caitlin O’Connor, and the couple are considering starting a family. Page Six has contacted Vergara’s representatives for comment.
