Poland Intercepts Russian Drones Violating Airspace Amid Ukraine Assault
Poland's military, with NATO support, shot down Russian drones that breached its airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.
Poland's military, in coordination with NATO allies, intercepted and destroyed Russian drones that violated its airspace during a substantial Russian assault on Ukraine. Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as "an act of aggression," marking the first instance of a NATO member engaging Russian assets within its own airspace.
The Polish Air Force tracked over ten drones, neutralizing those deemed a direct threat. NATO's Quick Reaction Alert aircraft, including Dutch F-35 fighters, were also deployed in response. The airspace violations led to temporary closures of Warsaw's Chopin Airport and Lublin Airport.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported that at least eight Russian drones targeted Poland during the attack, emphasizing the use of Iranian-made Shahed drones by Russia. The broader assault involved approximately 415 drones and over 40 missiles targeting 15 Ukrainian regions, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage.
In the United States, Senator Dick Durbin condemned the airspace violations, stating that repeated incursions by Russian drones are a test of NATO's resolve to protect member nations.
This incident escalates tensions between NATO and Russia, especially as joint Russian-Belarusian military exercises are set to commence near NATO borders. In response, Poland announced the closure of its border with Belarus amid regional security concerns.
