Romania and Poland Report Russian Drone Incursions Amid Rising Tensions

Summary

Romania and Poland have reported Russian drone incursions into their airspace, prompting heightened military responses and raising concerns over regional security.

Romania's defense ministry reported that its airspace was breached by a drone during a Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure. In response, Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets, which detected the drone until it disappeared from radar near the village of Chilia Veche.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized these drone incursions as "an obvious expansion of the war by Russia" and called for increased sanctions and collective defense measures.

In Poland, military and allied aircraft were deployed, and ground-based air defense and radar systems were placed on high alert due to the threat of drone strikes near its border. The operation lasted about two hours, during which Lublin Airport in eastern Poland was temporarily closed, and air strike warnings were issued for some border counties.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the operation as a preemptive move in response to the Russian drone threat. Although Russia claimed it did not target Poland, European officials suspect deliberate provocations.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace as "unacceptable," though clarified it's still uncertain whether the drones were deliberately directed at Poland.

These incidents have heightened concerns among NATO members about the potential for the conflict in Ukraine to spill over into neighboring countries, prompting calls for increased vigilance and coordinated defense efforts.
