Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol is implementing a comprehensive turnaround strategy to address declining sales and operational challenges. Since assuming leadership in August 2024, Niccol has focused on revitalizing the customer experience and improving store efficiency.
A key component of this strategy is the "Green Apron Service" model, designed to enhance customer interactions and reduce wait times. This model emphasizes personalized service and aims to deliver orders within four minutes. Early tests in 1,500 stores have shown promising results, leading to an accelerated rollout across all 11,000 company-owned North American locations by the end of summer 2025.
To support these initiatives, Starbucks is investing over $500 million in labor and technology. This includes hiring additional baristas and introducing AI-driven inventory systems to ensure consistent product availability. The company is also reintroducing condiment bars and enhancing in-store seating to foster a more welcoming environment.
Despite these efforts, Starbucks reported a 2% decline in U.S. same-store sales for the fiscal third quarter, marking the sixth consecutive quarterly decrease. However, sales in China have shown improvement, and the company is exploring partnerships to expand in smaller Chinese cities.
Niccol remains optimistic about the turnaround plan, stating that the company is committed to enhancing the customer experience and believes that positive results will follow.
