American Eagle's Sydney Sweeney Campaign Drives Q2 Earnings Beat
American Eagle Outfitters reported better-than-expected Q2 earnings, attributing success to its Sydney Sweeney campaign, which significantly boosted customer engagement and sales.
American Eagle Outfitters reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations, attributing the success to its recent marketing campaigns featuring actress Sydney Sweeney and NFL player Travis Kelce. The company announced a net income of $77.6 million, or 45 cents per share, surpassing analyst forecasts of 21 cents per share. Revenue stood at $1.28 billion, slightly down from $1.29 billion a year earlier, but still above projections.
The campaign with Sweeney, launched ahead of the back-to-school season, led to significant customer engagement, with the company gaining 700,000 new customers. The Sydney Jacket and The Sydney Jean, a custom style supporting the Crisis Text Line, both sold out within a day.
CEO Jay Schottenstein stated, "The fall season is off to a positive start. Fueled by stronger product offerings and the success of recent marketing campaigns with Sydney Sweeney and Travis Kelce, we have seen an uptick in customer awareness, engagement and comparable sales."
Despite some controversy surrounding the campaign's slogan, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," the company reported that the initiative led to "meaningful improvement in the business," with comparable sales up in the mid-single digits.
Looking ahead, American Eagle expects comparable sales to be approximately flat for the full year, an improvement over the previously anticipated 0.2% decline. However, the company adjusted its full-year operating income forecast to between $255 million and $265 million, down from the earlier range of $360 million to $375 million, citing the impact of tariffs.
