Latino Leaders Criticize ICE Operations in Chicago Amid Fatal Shooting and Arrests
Latino leaders in Chicago have condemned recent ICE operations, including a fatal shooting and controversial arrests, amid the Trump administration's 'Operation Midway Blitz.'
Latino leaders in Chicago have expressed strong disapproval of recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, which have included a fatal shooting and controversial arrests. These actions are part of the Trump administration's 'Operation Midway Blitz,' a campaign targeting sanctuary policies in Illinois.
On Friday, an ICE officer fatally shot Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez in Franklin Park, a Chicago suburb. According to officials, Villegas-Gonzalez attempted to evade arrest by driving his car at officers, dragging one of them. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. The officer involved received medical treatment. Homeland Security stated that the officer feared for his life and acted according to training.
The same day, ICE agents arrested Willian Gimenez during a traffic stop in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood. Gimenez's attorney, Kevin Herrera, suggested the arrest might be retaliation for Gimenez's involvement in a lawsuit concerning the treatment of immigrant workers. Herrera noted that Gimenez has a work permit and is pursuing an asylum claim. ICE stated that Gimenez was arrested for being in the country illegally, citing previous charges and a history of failing to appear in court.
These incidents have sparked protests and criticism from local officials. Representative Chuy Garcia, a Democrat, questioned the implications of ICE's actions, stating, "These incidents make us all ask, if ICE can kill one of our neighbors in broad daylight... if they can arrest someone for joining a lawsuit or simply for being Latino, what's to stop them from getting any one of us?"
The Department of Homeland Security's 'Operation Midway Blitz' aims to target sanctuary laws in Illinois. A DHS statement indicated that the operation focuses on "criminal illegal aliens who flocked to Chicago and Illinois because they knew Governor Pritzker and his sanctuary policies would protect them and allow them to roam free on American streets."
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has been a vocal opponent of the federal crackdown, arguing that it undermines sanctuary policies designed to protect immigrant populations.
