ICE Officer Fatally Shoots Man During Vehicle Stop Near Chicago
An ICE officer fatally shot a man during a vehicle stop in Franklin Park, Illinois, after the man attempted to flee, injuring an officer.
A man was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a vehicle stop in Franklin Park, Illinois, a suburb west of Chicago. The incident occurred when the man attempted to flee the scene, resulting in injuries to an officer.
ICE stated that during the operation, the suspect resisted arrest and tried to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking and dragging an officer. Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. Both the officer and the suspect received immediate medical attention and were transported to a local hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead. The officer sustained severe injuries and is in stable condition.
The Department of Homeland Security identified the suspect as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant with a history of reckless driving. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented, "We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement."
The incident occurred approximately six miles from a separate protest outside an ICE processing center in Broadview, Illinois. Demonstrators clashed with federal agents, and reports indicate that a protester was shot in the leg with a pepper ball by enforcement officers. The demonstration began at dawn and was set to continue until the evening, with several dozen people assembling outside the facility by late morning.
