Romania Reports Russian Drone Incursion into NATO Airspace
Romania detected a Russian drone breaching its airspace, marking the second NATO country to report such an incident recently.
Romania's defense ministry reported that a Russian drone entered its airspace on Saturday, marking the second NATO member to experience such an incursion in recent days. Romanian F-16 fighter jets were monitoring Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure along the Danube when they detected the drone approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Chilia Veche. The drone disappeared from radar shortly thereafter and did not fly over populated areas or pose an imminent threat, according to the ministry.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the incident, stating that the incursion could not have been a mistake and represented "an obvious expansion of the war by Russia." Moscow has not responded to Romania's claims.
Earlier in the week, Poland reported shooting down multiple Russian drones that violated its airspace during a large-scale Russian attack on western Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incursion as "an act of aggression" and confirmed that Poland had invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty, prompting consultations among member nations regarding potential threats to national security.
In response to these incidents, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte condemned Russia's actions, asserting the alliance's readiness to defend every inch of its territory. He emphasized that the violation was not an isolated incident and that a full assessment was ongoing.
These developments have heightened tensions in the region, with NATO members reinforcing their eastern defenses and closely monitoring the situation along their borders.
