Russia Launches Large-Scale Drone and Missile Attack on Ukraine, Killing One in Odesa

Summary

Russia carried out an overnight assault on Ukraine using over 300 drones and more than 30 cruise missiles, resulting in at least one death in Odesa and damage to critical infrastructure.

Russia conducted a major overnight attack on Ukraine, deploying more than 300 drones and over 30 cruise missiles, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The assault killed at least one person in the port city of Odesa, where more than 20 drones and a missile struck, Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov reported. Five people were rescued from a residential high-rise after a fire broke out, and six others, including a child, were wounded in the attack.

Zelenskyy stated that critical infrastructure in the northeastern Sumy region was also damaged. He expressed gratitude to international partners for supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts, highlighting the importance of joint weapons production, drone manufacturing, and the supply of air defense systems.

Russian forces have increased the frequency and scale of drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, with analysts predicting further escalation. Earlier in July, Russia launched a record 700 drones in a single night.

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported shooting down 71 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 13 drones were intercepted near the Russian capital.

Separately, Ukraine’s foreign minister accused Russia of deporting Ukrainian citizens, including former prisoners, into Georgia and leaving them without proper identification. Andrii Sybiha stated that dozens of people remain stranded in the transit zone at the border. Russian authorities have not responded to these allegations.
