Ukrainian Drone Strike Ignites Fire at Russian Oil Depot Near Sochi

Summary

A Ukrainian drone attack caused a significant fire at a Russian oil depot near Sochi, leading to firefighting efforts and temporary airport closures.

An overnight Ukrainian drone attack targeted an oil depot near Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi, igniting a major fire, according to Russian officials. Krasnodar regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that debris from a downed drone struck a fuel tank, prompting over 120 firefighters to combat the blaze. Videos circulating on social media depicted large plumes of smoke rising from the facility.

In response to the incident, Russia's civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, temporarily suspended flights at Sochi's airport. Further north, in the Voronezh region, authorities reported that four individuals were injured in another Ukrainian drone strike.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones over Russia and the Black Sea during the night. Concurrently, in southern Ukraine, a Russian missile strike hit a residential area in Mykolaiv, injuring seven people, as reported by the State Emergency Services.

These reciprocal attacks occurred at the conclusion of one of the deadliest weeks in Ukraine in recent months. A Russian drone and missile assault on Thursday resulted in 31 fatalities, including five children, and over 150 injuries.

Amid escalating hostilities, U.S. President Donald Trump has set an August 8 deadline for progress in peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine. He announced that special envoy Steve Witkoff would travel to Russia to advocate for a ceasefire, warning of potential new economic sanctions if advancements are not achieved.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced an agreement with Russia to exchange 1,200 prisoners following negotiations in Istanbul in July. He stated that the lists of individuals to be swapped are being finalized and efforts are underway to facilitate the return of Ukrainian civilians.

There has been no immediate comment from Russian officials regarding the prisoner exchange agreement.
