Houston mayor orders police to refer ICE cases only for jailable offenses
Mayor Sylvester Turner ordered Houston police to refer individuals to U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement only when they are arrested for a jailable offense, saying the move would reduce community fear after the recent elections.
The directive was issued on 6 November and confirmed on 7 November. Houston Public Media reported that Mayor John Whitmire had earlier signed an executive order restricting the Houston Police Department from contacting ICE unless a civil immigration warrant involved a jailable offense, citing community safety and the Democratic victories in the 2026 elections.
