Elon Musk's $445 million Republican spending backfires as Democrats seize Congress and Texas
Elon Musk spent $445 million on Republican candidates in the United States, but Democrats won control of Congress and key Texas races, and his companies' market values fell sharply, PBS reported. Earlier, after the midterm defeats, Musk deleted pro-Republican posts, NDTV said, following more than $458 million in spending. CNBC noted that his America PAC had poured a record $474 million into the 2026 midterms, yet most of the supported candidates lost and shares of SpaceX and Tesla dropped.
NDTV also reported Musk mocked alleged space-laser influence after the setbacks, while Texas senator-elect James Talarico criticized billionaire sway on social media. The BBC recorded a $47 million donation to Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign that did not prevent the seat from flipping to a Democrat in 2024, and Fortune said the spending has sparked speculation about Musk’s role in shaping the GOP agenda ahead of the 2028 election.
