UK Home Secretary doubles residency period, adds fast-track for high earners
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that the residency period required for indefinite leave to remain will rise from five to ten years, and that a fast-track route will be available for high-earning and public-service workers. The announcement follows a series of revisions.
Earlier, Mahmood said she would soften immigration reforms after criticism from Labour MPs and cabinet members, and she had indicated she would outline the adjusted legal migration rules in the Commons after internal party debate and a recent fall in net migration. She had also unveiled a pathway allowing care workers earning over £25,000 to apply for indefinite leave after five years while keeping stricter timelines for other groups.
